Why choose Stucco?

Stucco works well in a variety of applications ranging from traditional to contemporary. While much of our work involves new construction business as more builders and architects are realizing the advantages and beauty of stucco, for many building owners, restoration has proven to be more cost effective than demolition. EIFS gives older homes and buildings a new facelift.

These systems have played a critical role in their renovation strategies. Architects are choosing EIFS for their cost efficiency, simplicity. There are many details one can add with trims. Over the years we observed, that when it comes to EIFS and stucco and homeowners, there are some standard questions that always come up. Here are the most commonly asked questions in the form of an FAQ.

What does EIFS stand for?
EIFS stands for: Exterior Insulation and Finish System. A basic EIFS system consists of four components:

1. Polystyrene or polyisocyanurate foam insulation board.
2. Glass fiber reinforcing mesh.
3. Weather barrier composed of a durable, water-resistant base coat applied to the insulation.
4. Acrylic co-polymer technology, colorfast and crack-resistant finish coat.

What is the difference between EIFS and Stucco?
EIFS come in several different types. But the typical installation includes the substrate, polystyrene foam board fastened or glued to the substrate, fiberglass reinforcement mesh, base coat (usually 1/16 to 1/4 inches thick and then a finish coast.

Stucco or wire mesh system on the other hand is plastering Portland cement. The Stucco assembly usually includes a substrate over the framing members with a moisture barrier present, self furring lath, plaster cement basecoat and finally the hard coat finish.

Both systems have their advantages and disadvantages.

 
How to choose the right stucco contractor?

When it comes to stucco you have to remember that cheap price, means low quality workmanship, which equals problems with your stucco. Choosing an unqualified stucco contractor could mean instead of reaching your dream, you might end up having nightmares.

Your goal is not to become a technical expert but, you want to learn enough to ask the right questions and evaluate the answers.
